Then the mice said goodbye to Greenback and the other frogs, thanking them repeatedly for their abundant
hospitality and for assistance in finding a new home. Though their stay
at the pond was a short one, some of the
mice had grown attached to the wet and weedy surroundings.
“If you ever visit the frog pond at the
estate,” Long Legs said, “be sure to say hello to everyone. Tell them about our
new life here. Many will be interested in knowing how we’re doing.”
“Consider it done,” Gabriel said.
Greenback had
the final word. “And should any of you mice travel this way again, please feel free to stop by for a
chat or for more frogly advice. We have plenty to spare. Now farewell and safe traveling!”
With that, Greenback leaped into the air and
splashed into the pond like a rock. The other frogs followed his lead
in bunches, and after several seconds of splattering water and
choppy waves, the pond lay still like green glass.
“Well, I guess that’s that,” said Gabriel flatly. “No fuss. No commotion. Just what we asked for. Now the rest
is up to
us
.” He scanned the concerned yet excited faces of his friends, feeling the weight of their collective gaze. Though
Edmund would serve as their guide to the estate, Gabriel knew only too well that they had chosen him as their leader.
He hoped he was up to
the task and wouldn’t betray their trust. “Let’s go!” he said confidently. “There’s no turning
back now.
Edmund, lead on.”
